Writing: Ramadan

 Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, which occurs on the ninth month of the lunar-based Islamic calendar, all Muslims are required to abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk for 30 days. After sundown, Muslims break their fast with iftar, a meal which usually starts with dates and water or milk, followed by dinner.

Ramadan, one of the months in the Islamic calendar, was also part of ancient Arabs' calendars. The naming of Ramadan stems from the Arabic root “ar-ramad,” which means scorching heat. Muslims believe that in A.D. 610, the angel Gabriel appeared to Prophet Muhammad and revealed to him the Quran, the Islamic holy book.Muslims all over the world regardless of nationality, ethnicity, race or colour participate in fasting for the entire month of Ramadan: The new moon determines the start of Ramadan: Ramadan fast is one of the five pillars of Islam: Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat). According to the teachings in Islam, Ramadan holds greater importance as it is the first time when Allah SWT (God) revealed the Quran (Holy book of Muslims) to Prophet Muhammad PBUH. During this period Muslims across the world devote their time to reciting the Holy Quran and also perform nightly prayers. Ramadan is known as the holy month of fasting, with Muslims abstaining from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. The fast is intended to remind Muslims of the suffering of those less fortunate and bring believers closer to God (Allah, in Arabic). Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, it is observed by Muslims worldwide and is viewed as a blessed month. Ramadan ends after 29 or 30 days, depending on the moon. The start of Ramadan depends on the lunar cycle, it starts with the sighting of the Young Moon and ends with a New Moon.
