Maori
According to Maori legend, the world as we know it was formed when Tane Mahuta the god of the forest praised apart Ranginui, the father of the sky, and Papatuanuku, the mother of the earth. Afterwards, Tane Mahuta and his brothers slowly went about making all things on earth and in the sky.hey greet people by pressing our noses and foreheads together. Traditionally the Maori language was never written down.
They cook their food under the ground. Their culture is one of the youngest in the world. You can tell social status and family history through a Maori Tattoo. Maori culture is the customs, cultural practices and beliefs of the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand. It originated from and is still part of Eastern Polynesian culture. Most Maori people don’t know their own language. They know a lot of English more than their own language. Pounamu is a hard, highly valued stone mainly found as boulders. It is also called greenstone or New zealand jade. Apirana Ngata, of Ngati porou was born on the 3rd july 1874 in Te Araroa on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island.
Growing up he was influenced greatly by his father, Paratene Ngata, and his father’s Uncle Rapata Wahaha.
Both of these men were leaders within Ngati Porou and they were the ones who encouraged Apirana to study, and study a lot.
Ngati Porou was one of the Iwi in New Zealand that had developed close relationships with the British Crown, and he used these connections to educate himself in the ways of European politics and law.
