Who chooses the host city for the future Olympics?

The decision for where the future Olympic games will take place is decided by the members of the IOC (International Olympic Committee). The host city is elected by a majority of the votes cast by a secret ballot. Each active member of the IOC has only one vote. A member of the IOC is not allowed to vote when the vote concerns the selection of a city in the country that the person resides.  


Who can apply to host the Olympic games?

In the first stage of the selection process any city in the world is able to submit an application to become a host city. After approximately 10 months the Executive Board of the IOC decides which applicant cities will become official candidates based on the recommendation of a working group that reviews all of the applications. 


Beijing 2022:

The next Winter Olympic games will be held in Beijing in 2022. Beijing is the capital city of the People’s Republic of China. There are over 21 million people living in Beijing. It is the most populous city. The Winter Olympics will be held from Friday 4th February 2022 until Sunday 20th February 2022. Some of the events in the winter Olympics include figure skating, bobsleigh, skiing, snowboarding, luge and many more events. There are 15 sports in total currently at the Winter Olympics. 


Paris 2024:

The next Summer Olympic games will be held in Paris in 2024. This is not the first time Paris has hosted the Olympics; they have hosted it in 1900 and 1924. The 2024 Olympics in Paris will mark 100 years since the last time the French city had the Olympics. Paris will joi London in being one of the only cities to hold the Olympics three times. Paris is located in Northern Central France. It is considered to be the most populated city of France with an estimated population of 2,175,601 residents living there. 


LA 2028:

Los Angeles, officially the City of Los Angeles (LA) will host the 2028 Olympics. It is the largest city in California with an estimated population of 4 million people. It is the second largest city in the United States of America, after New York. Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic and cultural diversity along with the Hollywood entertainment industry. In 1932 Los Angeles hosted the Olympic Games for the first time. The event marked the introduction of Los Angeles to the world as a major U.S city. 


Brisbane 2032:

Brisbane is located in Queensland, Australia. It is in fact the capital city of Queensland as it is the most populous city in Queensland. Brisbane is the third most populated city in Australia. The population of Brisbane is estimated to be around 2.6 million people. Brisbane is one of the oldest cities in Australia and was founded upon the traditional lands of the Turrbal people. Brisbane will host the 2032 Summer Olympics this will be the third Olympic Games for Australia. The Olympics were held in Sydney in 2000 and Melbourne in 1956.
